Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore has once again topped the chart in Madhya Pradesh for the highest number of dog bite cases, painting a worrying picture for the city’s public health and safety.
A report released recently by the National Health Mission (NHM) under the National Rabies Control Programme reveals that Indore recorded a staggering 58,508 dog bite cases in 2024, the highest among all major cities in the state.
What’s more alarming is that in just the first six months of 2025 from January to June the city has already logged more than 30,000 fresh cases, averaging over 5,000 incidents every month.
The data shows Indore far ahead of other cities, with Jabalpur (13,691), Gwalior (11,902), Bhopal (10,769), Ujjain (10,296) and Ratlam (6,783) trailing behind.
This vast difference puts Indore at the epicentre of the state’s dog bite crisis, raising urgent questions about stray dog management, vaccination drives, and public safety measures.

As per national guidelines, there should be one sterilisation centre for every 10 wards, highlighting the pressing need for increased infrastructure in cities like Indore to address the crisis effectively.
Health experts warn that without aggressive sterilisation, vaccination drives, and public awareness campaigns, Indore’s rising dog bite numbers could become an uncontrollable public health hazard.
