CM Sarma wrote on X that the aspirations of this community were ignored for decades, but now they are getting their rights. The government has taken steps like the statue of Birangana Sati Sadhani, financial assistance of Rs 77 crore, a state university and now reservation in higher education.

Under this decision, 18 seats in state universities, 9 seats in polytechnics and 32 seats in engineering colleges will be reserved for Chutiya students.

Who are the Chutia community?

The Chutia community is an ancient tribal group of Assam, living mainly in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts of Upper Assam. Historically, this community established the Chutia Kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley from the 12th to the 16th century. This kingdom was famous for its rich culture, agricultural production and social contribution.

Today, the Chutia community is placed in the OBC category in Assam. Most of the people are involved in farming, small business and government services, but they cherish their language, tradition and festivals like Bihu with great passion.

Reservation announced in higher education

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that students of the Chutia community of the state will now be given reservation in higher education. This includes state universities, polytechnic institutes and engineering colleges.

This reservation will not only provide new opportunities to these youth in the field of education, but this step will further strengthen the historical and cultural diversity of Assam.
