It is anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-acne, so its use brings glow to the skin and it also becomes healthy from inside. Its regular use helps in exfoliation of the skin.

However, it is important to be cautious while using nutmeg, as some people may have sensitivity to it. Dermatologist Dr. Nahar Singh told Healthshots that a patch must be applied before using it. Some people have experienced reactions like rashes, itching and swelling due to its use. Therefore, Dr. Singh emphasizes on its correct use. He says, 'Using good quality organic nutmeg is better for the skin.' So let's know how to use nutmeg for the skin, its benefits and what things should be kept in mind.

What is nutmeg?

Nutmeg is a seed of a plant called Myristica. It contains volatile oil, fixed oil, protein, fat and starch along with mucilage. A study called Essential Oils in Food Preservation, Flavor and Safety states that it is used to treat skin diseases like eczema.

Benefits of Nutmeg

Nutmeg improves sleep quality and helps in relaxing the mind and releasing stress. It also releases happiness hormones. It can also be used to treat depression. Apart from this, nutmeg relieves chronic pain and helps in reducing inflammation. It also acts as a detox agent.

Nutmeg for skin

Anti-inflammatory: Nutmeg is anti-inflammatory. It is effective in soothing dermatitis, sunburn and eczema and relieving irritation in the skin. Research published in the Journal of Coastal Life Medicine states that nutmeg-based gel has the ability to reduce inflammation.

Slows down the ageing process: Nutmeg acts as a free radical-reducing agent. This helps slow down the ageing process and keeps the skin looking younger for a longer period of time.

Prevention of acne: It is rich in anti-acne properties, which help in reducing oil in the skin. It is beneficial for acne-prone skin. Nutmeg contains a substance called myristicin, which helps in fighting acne.

Exfoliating properties: This property of nutmeg helps in removing dead skin cells. This reduces acne. It also helps in renewing the skin and improving its texture.

Reduces pigmentation: Nutmeg reduces the production of melanin, which reduces pigmentation. Its use reduces skin blemishes and makes the skin look clear. It also helps in making the skin tone uniform.

Use it like this

  • For eczema, nutmeg powder can be mixed with coconut oil and applied on the affected area.
  • For the face, apply a mixture of 1 teaspoon of nutmeg powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and honey on the face for 15 minutes and then wash it off. This reduces acne and brightens the skin.
  • Mix nutmeg powder with some milk to make a paste. This can be applied on the face two or three times a week. This increases the glow of the skin and gives it a glow. Avoid using a thick nutmeg scrub.
