Dharmasthala’s nyaya tradition:Dharmasthala, a sacred pilgrimage, is far and wide for its ‘justice’ tradition. This tradition has been an example of resolving disputes without a court, with mutual consent. But now this respected system is under the circle of such a movement, behind which personal interests are said to be hidden. The center of this dispute is Mahesh Shetty Thimrodi, who calls himself a Hindu nationalist and public servant. The court records show that they have lost in many land disputes in the justice system of the shrine. This defeat is considered to be the real reason for his anger and campaign.
Mahesh was born in Ujire village of Belthangadi taluk. He calls himself a constable of the people on the forums, but the local people say that after a continuous defeat in land disputes, they questioned the fairness of the shrine, which gave birth to their campaign.
Mahesh showed himself an advocate of justice by standing with the victim’s family in the 2012 famous Sojjanya rape-murder case. But critics say that they are using the sentiments of a heartbreaking family for their political and economic benefits.
Mahesh’s campaign is different from general movements. It looks organized on a large scale posters, rallies and social media campaigns. Such a big management is not possible without heavy funding, but the source of these money has not been cleared yet.
Mahesh was proposed for a fair ‘Truth Test’, but he turned down and demanded to conduct the investigation on his own terms. This attitude has raised serious questions on his intention and transparency, which has weakened the credibility of the movement.
Now this issue is not just of accountability, but an attempt to promote the mob by weakening a respected judicial system. If this tradition bowed to private rivalry, then trust in justice in the society will suffer deep shock.
