Maharashtra Vehicle Registration Plate: The Government of Maharashtra once again has given a high-security registration plate (HSRP) The deadline for planting has extended. Now the owners will get time till 15 August 2025 for the compulsory fitting of these plates on registered vehicles before 1 April 2019. The State Transport Department has given a clear warning that strict action will be started against those who break the rules from 16 August 2025.
The initiative began in December 2024 and this is the third time the deadline has been increased. The first date was fixed on 31 March 2025, which was extended to 30 April and then 30 June.
According to the Transport Department, around 2.10 crore old vehicles in Maharashtra come under the purview of installing HSRP. However, by the end of June, only 23 lakh vehicles have been able to get a new plate, which is about 11% of the total number.
The Transport Department said in a public notice, “After August 15, enforcement squad will take action on vehicles without HSRP. However, vehicles whose valid booking of HSRP fitting will be done on or before 15 August or before, will be exempted from punitive action.”
HSRP aims to make it easier to identify and trace vehicles and reduce crimes like vehicle theft. The plate is tamper-proof and contains the laser-codes of unique 10-nuns, non-removable snap locks and chromium-based holograms, making it much more secure than the normal number plate. All the new vehicles sold after April 2019 come with factory-fitted HSRP, while this feature was implemented in a phased manner for older vehicles and repeated expansion in the time limit.
Vehicle owners can book HSRP through their nearest authorized dealer or authorized website of the Transport Department. It is mandatory to enter the registration number, engine number and chassis number of the vehicle at the time of booking. The vehicle will have to move for fittings on the scheduled date, where experts will permanently plant the plate with technicians snap lock. The price of HSRP depends on the type of vehicle and includes both front and back plates. Also, the laser code and hologram information on the plate is recorded in the national vehicle database, which makes it easier to track the vehicle in case of theft or crime.
