Sl bhojegowda: JD (S) member in Karnataka Legislative Council SL Bhojegowda made such a statement about stray dogs that there has been a ruckus. During the discussion in the Legislative Council, Bhojgowda claimed that 2500 dogs were killed when he was the head of Chikkamagaluru Municipal Council.
In the Legislative Council, Bhojgowda said that dogs were buried under trees so that they could become "natural manure". Bhojgowda made this statement during a discussion on the issue of stray dogs in the council. However, it did not say at what time they killed dogs. His statement has been criticized by animal rights supporters and common people.
Responding to Bhojgowda's question, the Karnataka government allegedly expressed helplessness, the city administration and Haj Minister Rahim Khan raised a finger on animal lovers citing the petitions. Subsequently, the Legislative Councilors said that 10 dogs should be released in each animal lover's house.
During this, Bhojgowda said, "We are looking at cases of dog bites daily. The victims are being admitted to the hospital. If someone opposes the removal of stray dogs from the roads, the government should leave some dogs in their premises so that they can understand the reality. If a stray dog bites their children, what will they do?"
Explain that Bhojegowda has given this statement at a time when the Supreme Court has issued instructions to the Municipal Corporation officials of Delhi and National Capital Region to immediately catch stray dogs, sterilize them and keep them permanently in shelter sites.
According to the infectious disease report of the Karnataka State Monitoring Unit, 2.86 lakh dog bites were reported in Karnataka from January to August 2025. 26 people died of rabies infection due to the dog being bitten by the dog. Between 4 and 10 August alone, there were cases of 5,652 dog bites.
