In the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) brought in Dewald Brevis to take the place of Gurjapneet Singh, who had to leave due to an injury. Brevis agreed to a deal worth INR 2.2 crore. CSK, who have won the IPL five times, had some batting problems that season. They only signed seven international players at the IPL auction, which meant they could add a player who could score quickly in the middle of innings.

Since their bowling team was generally in good shape, the team managers chose to bring in a batter instead of another fast bowler to directly replace Gurjapneet Singh. Brevis participated in six games for Chennai that season, scoring 225 runs with a strike rate of 180. CSK’s middle batting order included Indian players like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, and Deepak Hooda, who didn’t perform very well. The team needed someone like Brevis who could create momentum in the middle stages of the game. Before, Suresh Raina used to play that role, and Brevis’s performance in 2025 brought back memories of those successful times for the five-time champions.

Now, a big question is whether CSK will keep Brevis for the same price of INR 2.2 crore for the 2026 IPL season. It seems likely they will. The rules state that players who joined different teams after the competition was restarted due to international issues cannot be retained. For example, Mumbai Indians won’t be able to keep Jonny Bairstow, Gujarat Titans can’t keep Kusal Mendis, and Punjab Kings can’t keep Kyle Jamieson.

Brevis showed how good he is in the second T20I match against Australia, which makes Chennai very interested in keeping him for the 2026 season. In that game, he scored a century in just 41 balls, helping South Africa win by 53 runs. This young player has shown his skill in the T20 format, and since CSK has the chance to keep him for only INR 2.2 crore, it’s unlikely they will let him go.
