OpenAI faced a lot of opposition from users after launching ChatGPT's new model GPT-5. Users were accusing GPT-5 of giving short and flat answers compared to older models. Many users said that it lacked 'personality', which was not there in earlier versions. Now OpenAI has released another major update just a few days after the launch of the new model. The company's CEO, Sam Altman, announced on August 13 that now users will be able to choose from three new response modes in GPT-5: Auto, Fast, and Thinking.

According to Altman, most users will use the Auto mode, but other modes will prove useful for those who want more control. The rate limit for GPT-5's Thinking mode has been set at 3,000 messages per week, while additional capacity will be available through GPT-5 Thinking mini. The context limit of this mode is now 196k tokens, allowing it to process longer documents and conversations. Altman also indicated that these limits can be changed if needed.

GPT-4o is back

Finally, after the protest, OpenAI has restarted the old GPT-4o model for all paid users. The company says that if it decides to shut it down in the future, users will be given notice in advance. Paid users now also have the option of the "Show additional models" toggle, through which they can add models like o3, 4.1, and GPT-5 Thinking mini. At the same time, GPT-4.5 is currently available only to pro users, as it requires more GPU resources.

Altman also said that the team is working on making GPT-5's personality warmer and user-friendly. He believes that in the future, the facility to customize the model's personality at the user level will be necessary.

Power of GPT-5
Last week, OpenAI claimed that GPT-5 is more capable than ever in coding and solving complex problems. The company called it so advanced that it can give ChatGPT the experience of a PhD-level expert. OpenAI has described GPT-5 as the most powerful coding model ever.
