In a heartbreaking incident in the Kotda police jurisdiction of Udaipur district, a roof collapse at a government school on Friday resulted in the death of a young girl, while another child sustained injuries, according to police reports.
In response to the tragedy, the education department has suspended two officials and instructed the filing of a first information report against the construction company involved in the project.
According to a statement from the department, the accident occurred at PM Shri Government Upper Primary School in the village of Patharpadi during Independence Day celebrations. The acting assistant engineer, Hem Singh, and a civil consultant working on contract were suspended for apparent negligence.
The police indicated that the school building was in a dilapidated state and under construction. At the time of the incident, both girls were playing near the school when the roof collapsed, resulting in one girl's death and injuries to the other.
The incident took place in the tribal-dominated area of Kotda, specifically in the village of Patharwadi. Authorities confirmed that the school was not conducting classes at the time, and the girls were tending to goats nearby.
Madan Dilawar, the state's school education minister, expressed his sorrow over the incident and has requested an investigation into the matter. The local police chief, Moongla Ram, noted that the Independence Day celebrations were held at a different location due to the ongoing construction at the school.
The deceased girl, identified as Moli (12), tragically lost her life, while the injured girl, Payal (11), was transported to a neighboring state, Gujarat, for medical treatment. Following the incident, local residents expressed their anger and began protesting, accusing the administration of using substandard materials for the construction.
An official from the education department clarified that the roof collapse occurred at a school building under construction, resulting in the death of a girl passing by and injuring another. It was noted that neither of the girls were students of the school, which operates elsewhere.
