PTC Web Desk: Seattle marked a historic moment on India’s 79th Independence Day as the Indian flag was raised for the first time at the iconic Space Needle, a 605-foot landmark built in 1962 for the World Fair. The Indian Consulate in Seattle confirmed the event, describing it as a proud celebration of India’s growing cultural and technological presence in the Pacific Northwest.
Consul General of India in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell jointly led the flag-hoisting ceremony, highlighting the role of the Indian-American diaspora in shaping Seattle’s reputation as a global technology hub.
Following the ceremony, a community reception was held at Kerry Park, where the Indian tricolour flying atop the Space Needle provided a stunning backdrop against the city skyline. The event drew a large turnout of Indian-American community members and was attended by dignitaries, including US Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens, and Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho.
Congressman Smith welcomed the occasion, describing the hoisting of India’s flag at the Space Needle as a reflection of the region’s diversity and the strong ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
The celebrations featured cultural performances, including national anthems, Indian classical dance, and a poetic recital by acclaimed actor and artist Piyush Mishra.
In a special tribute, King County, home to 39 cities in the Greater Seattle area, issued proclamations declaring August 15 as India Day. Meanwhile, several of Seattle’s landmarks—including Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, Westin, Seattle Great Wheel, and even Tacoma Dome—were illuminated in the colours of the Indian flag.
The Seattle Consulate, which was inaugurated in November 2023, said the overwhelming participation reflected the strong bonds of friendship between India and the United States.
