Britain's best fish and chip shop has been revealed, and it's frying up its award-winning suppers in Darlington. Yarm Road Fish and Chips, based at 366 Yarm Road, has been named 'Takeaway of the Year' at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2025, beating rivals from across the country to take the coveted title.

The family-run business, with more than 20 years of experience in the trade, is no stranger to praise from locals, but this latest recognition puts it firmly on the national map. Announcing the win on its website, the team said: "We did it! We are thrilled to have won fish and chip takeaway of the year in the 2025 Fish & Chips Awards!

"With over 20 years' experience in the fish & chip industry, we offer quality fish and chips and other tempting meals, including our homemade fish cake recipe and, of course, the secret ingredients of our renowned crispy batter!

"We pride ourselves in the knowledge that fish and chips is still the most nutritious takeaway meal and is reasonable in cost too."

The shop currently holds an impressive 4.6-star rating on Google, backed up by a stream of glowing reviews from satisfied customers.

One diner who tried the newly opened sit-in restaurant wrote: "I ate in the new restaurant, service was quick, friendly and efficient. The cod was excellent and fresh, the chips perfectly crisp, and the mushy peas silky smooth.

"I visited as I'd heard about the 2025 Best Chippy award, which is definitely deserved!"

Another visitor enjoyed a meal there with their father, praising both the food and atmosphere.

They said: "Recently enjoyed the new restaurant with my dad. Brilliant tasty food, good value and in a calm and relaxing environment. Love the décor and comfy chairs.

"Staff were excellent, serving us quickly and with charm. Two fish and chips meals will set you back about £30. I can see why Yarm Road won awards!"

Although Yarm Road Fish and Chips is based in Yarm Road in Darlington, its name nods to Yarm, a market town just 25 minutes away.

Yarm sits on a bend of the River Tees and is known for its Georgian high street lined with independent boutiques, artisan bakeries, cosy cafés, and traditional pubs.

The 43-arch Yarm Viaduct dominates the skyline, while cobbled paths and period shopfronts give the town an historic character.

The monthly farmers' market draws visitors from across the region, offering fresh local produce, handmade crafts, and street food stalls. Surrounded by countryside and within easy reach of the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills, Yarm blends small-town charm with a lively shopping and dining scene.

For visitors heading to the area to sample the UK's best fish and chips, combining the trip with a stroll through Yarm's historic streets offers the perfect North East day out, award-winning food followed by one of the region's most picturesque market towns.
