TV antiques expert Angus Ashworth - best known as being the face of Discovery+ show The Yorkshire Auction House and a regular face on BBC's Antiques Road Trip - has claimed there is one key area nobody ever thinks to look when searching their homes for hidden gems. The auctioneer, who is based in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to share his top tips.
"If people are looking at home - always remember the outside and the garage. People discredit what's outside, and whenever I go to a job I'm like, 'Shall we have a look in the garden?' and they say, 'Oh, there's nothing out there'. But then you go, 'Ooh that's a really nice planter or trough'. So people, I think, because it's outside they just write it off. But actually sometimes the outside can be more valuable than the inside."
So get checking your backyards and sheds - you just might find something incredible.
If you've scoured your home from top to bottom, Angus advised that there are "bargains to be had" in the most unexpected of places. He explained: "Most people at car-boots are fairly with it now. They're what we call part-time dealers, so it isn't likely you'll get a massive bargain - but they are still out there. We still see them crop up.
"Even now with all the TV shows, I remember a guy came in last year with this chair, 'Can you have a look at this chair? We're having a clear out, I was going to take it to the tip but my wife says I have to bring it in and check it out'. It's a lovely chair, it's a wainscot. Worth £600. And he went 'Ah, okay. I'll let my wife know she's right!'
"Stuff is still out there, there are still things to be found in charity shops and places like that that does get overlooked. It's never been easier to get an idea of whether something's good or not - you can take photos, email them in to all sorts of people. There's lots of people who will give you that free advice."
Angus is currently starring in the new series of The Yorkshire Auction House - and he has a definite soft spot for the "diverse" county.
He said: "The whole of the UK is wonderful and I'm lucky I get to travel all over the country and see all sorts of areas you probably wouldn't go to. There are great places all over. But Yorkshire is special.
"If you ask most people, they'd say it's the people, but actually I think it's the whole package. It's the diversity of Yorkshire, it's got everything - the coast, the moors, the cities. The people are friendly, and the way of life... there's this Yorkshire spirit."
