Additional information on Joseph Caroff
Joseph Caroff was born on August 18, 1921, in Linden, New Jersey. He was the youngest of five siblings, with four older sisters and one younger brother. His father, Julius, was a painter known for his ability to transform a plaster wall to resemble wood, as he was not merely painting but rendering it, he noted.
He completed his studies in 1942, majoring in advertising design, and was elected class president for three consecutive years while also serving as the art editor for the school yearbook,
Prattonia.
“I enjoyed that work immensely, mainly because it allowed me to read a book, interpret it, and then create a cover design that I believed best captured the essence of that book,” he expressed in the TCM documentary.
Caroff also crafted the logo and title signature for Orion Pictures, designed several album covers for Decca Records, and created logos for ABC’s Olympic broadcasts (featuring the network’s circular letters intertwined with five Olympic rings), ABC News, and
20/20 (designed to look like a pair of eyeglasses).
