The Delhi Airport has now joined the list of selected airports in the world, where passengers have the ability to handle passengers annually (over 100 million) annually. The capacity of this hub operating Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has now reached 109 million passengers.

This achievement was achieved in May 2023 after Terminal-1 was fully commented. With this capacity, Delhi Airport has become the second airport in Asia and the only airport in India to join this club. Earlier, only Tokyo Haneda Airport was on this list.

If the government approves Terminal-2 to rebuild and modernize it, then the total capacity of Delhi Airport may increase to 140 million passengers. The proposal is currently under consideration.

Second major airport in the Delhi-NCR region-Noida International Airport (Jewelry)-is expected to start by November this year. It will have a starting capacity of 12 million passengers annually. This airport will help reduce the increasing pressure at Delhi Airport. Delhi Airport has already handled over 80 million passengers in 2024.

According to the latest OAG data, the airports of the world which have more than 100 million capacity include Atlanta (125.48 million), Dubai (120 million), Tokyo Haneda (110 million), London Heathro (103 million) and Dallas (102.9 million).

Competition between airports globally is increasing rapidly. The current capacity of Istanbul Airport is 90 million, which is expected to reach 120 million by the end of the year and a target of 200 million by 2028. At the same time, the new King Salman International Airport of Saudi Arabia is targeting 120 million passengers by 2030 and 185 million passengers by 2050.
