After the success of its launch back in 2023, Kylie Jenner has finally expanded the shade range of her Kylie Cosmetics’ Kylash Volume Mascara. The brand new True Brown shade has just landed in selected retailers for £23, and in my search for the perfect brown mascara, I decided to put it to the test.

The Kylash Volume Mascara adds multi-dimensional definition to your lashes, and both volumises and lengthens them whilst helping to hold curl for natural-looking fluttery lashes. The brush is huge and chunky, which ensures it separates and coats every lash with the mascara’s signature weightless fibres.

These lightweight fibres are designed to stop flaking or smudging, and its formula is infused with grapeseed oil and pro-vitamin B5 which nourishes and strengthens your lashes when you wear it. It also includes rice bran wax, canauba wax and synthetic beeswax which give your lashes a weightless lift and help them hold their shape and length.

My honest review of the Kylash Volume Mascara

I usually stick to a waterproof mascara, which tends to cover all bases and stops smudging from sweat, watery eyes and rain, making it a great year-round pick. My usual pick is MAC’s MACstack Waterproof Mascara (£27), which also comes in a chestnut brown shade and has so far proved to withstand just about anything.

I was a little apprehensive about the longevity of the Kylash Volume Mascara as it wasn’t touted as waterproof, and instead is simply “smudge-proof”. However I decided to give it something of a trial by fire and wear it to a gig where I knew it would be hot, humid, and there’d be plenty of sweating to see how well it held up.

Firstly, the application of the Kylash Volume Mascara was straightforward. The large brush makes it easy to cover all your lashes with just a couple of swipes, and the formula is quite thin and lightweight, which means you don’t get clumping or a heavy feeling on your lashes. In fact, I could barely feel it on them at all, which is always preferable for me.

The brown colour is quite subtle, and the colour payoff isn’t the strongest I’ve ever used, so this is perfect for more of a natural, no-makeup makeup look. But if you’re wanting some major drama, you might want to try some other options like Lancôme’s Lash Idôle Mascara Brown (£21, down from £28) or the Fenty Beauty Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara (£15, down from £20).

Longevity is where I was most concerned, but it turns out my worries were unfounded. Despite several hours of dancing and singing in a crowded, hot room on one of the hottest days of the year, the mascara held up incredibly well. By the time I got home and took my makeup off – a whole seven hours later – there were only two tiny smudges below my eyes, which is a win in my book.

It also came off very easily with zero rubbing or scrubbing, which as someone with sensitive eyes I really appreciated. Whilst it may not be my default night out mascara, the Kylash Volume Mascara has secured a place in both my every day and holiday beauty bags, and its £23 price tag is an added bonus.
