Mumbai has been hit by continuous rainfall and significant waterlogging over the last two days. In light of the deteriorating weather, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several areas. Furthermore, a warning for extremely heavy rainfall has been announced, valid until August 20. Parents and students are left wondering if schools will remain closed on Wednesday, seeking clarity on the situation.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has yet to release any official statement regarding school closures for tomorrow. However, past incidents have shown that sudden holidays were declared due to severe rain conditions. Currently, the Panvel Municipal Corporation has mandated the closure of schools and colleges in the city on August 20.
It is anticipated that educational institutions in Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Raigad, Chandrapur districts, as well as the Pune Ghat and Nashik Ghat regions, may also close, given the red alert in effect for the next 12 hours. Nevertheless, an official confirmation is still pending.
In response to the ongoing heavy rain across various parts of Maharashtra, the Central Railway has announced the cancellation of 14 long-distance trains (7 pairs) on Tuesday. This precautionary measure aims to ensure passenger safety, as waterlogged tracks and poor visibility have rendered operations unsafe. The affected routes include connections to and from Pune, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), and other major cities.
