A serious accident occurred on Friday in Tarapur-Boyer Industrial Area in Palghar district of Maharashtra, when nitrogen gas leaks in a pharmaceutical company. Four people died in this accident, while two other employees are seriously ill and have been admitted to the intensive care room (ICU) of the hospital for treatment.
This painful incident took place in the Medley Pharma Company campus of Boisar, about 130 km from Mumbai. Vivekananda Kadam, head of Palghar District Disaster Management Cell, said that the accident took place between 2:30 and 3:00 pm. A sudden leakage of nitrogen gas started in a unit of the company, affecting the workers present there.
Relief and rescue operations were started immediately after the incident. Six workers were admitted to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. By 6:15 pm, it was confirmed that four of them had died. The condition of the remaining two workers also remains critical and they are undergoing treatment.
Nitrogen gas is commonly used in industrial processes, especially to maintain chemical balance in pharmaceutical companies or to neutralize other gases. However, if this gas is not used or leaked in a controlled manner, it can become fatal. This gas is colorless and odorless, which makes it difficult to realize the danger in time.
Investigation of this accident has been started by the local administration and factory management. Officials have said that it will be seen whether the safety standards were followed or not, and strict action will be taken against the responsible persons in case of negligence.
The State Industrial Safety and Health Department (Dish) has also been directed to submit a detailed report of the incident. The company premises have been closed at present and other employees there have also been sent to safe places.
There is an atmosphere of panic in the area after the accident. Local residents have demanded regular security inspection in the industrial area so that such incidents can be avoided in future.
