PTC Web Desk: The Punjabi film industry has lost one of its brightest stars and warmest souls, Dr Jaswinder Bhalla, the legendary comedian and actor whose wit and charm touched millions of hearts.
Born on May 4, 1960, in Doraha, Ludhiana, Bhalla was not only an entertainer but also an academic, serving as a professor while nurturing his passion for comedy. His journey began in 1988 with “Chhankata 88”, an audio release that became a cultural milestone, giving birth to unforgettable characters like Chacha Chatar Singh and Bhoondhu. From there, he went on to grace Punjabi cinema with memorable performances in films such as Dulla Bhatti, Carry On Jatta, Jatt and Juliet, Mr & Mrs 420, and Manje Bistre.
For over three decades, Dr Bhalla carried the torch of Punjabi humour, blending satire with simplicity, and making audiences laugh while reflecting on life’s realities. His colleagues often called him the “Patriarch of Punjabi Comedy”, a title he truly lived up to.
Beyond the screen, he was a humble human being, a true friend, and a mentor. His close friend Bal Mukund Sharma described their 40-year bond as that of brothers, a testament to the warmth and loyalty Bhalla carried in his personal life.
As he takes his final bow, the void he leaves behind is immeasurable. Dr Jaswinder Bhalla will be remembered not just as a comedian, but as an icon who gave Punjab the gift of timeless laughter. His legacy will live on through his films, his characters, and the countless smiles he created.
