Pitra Paksha has special significance in Hinduism. It is also called Shraddha Paksha. It is believed that in this fortnight, our ancestors come to the earth and bless their descendants by accepting the shraddha and tarpan of their descendants. Pitru Paksha 2025 starts from September 7 and it will conclude on 21 September with Sarvapitra Amavasya. In these 15 days, it is considered to be the duty of every Hindu family to please your ancestors through Shraddha and Tarpan. The blessings of ancestors removes every hindrance of life and brings prosperity and peace to the family.

Pitru Paksha 2025 How long for when?

Start 7 September 2025, Sunday (from the next day of Bhadrapada Purnima)

Closing 21 September 2025, Sunday (Sarvapitri Amavasya on Amavasya Tithi)

This time the duration of Pitru Paksha will be 15 days, in which people will perform Shraddha, Tarpan and Pindadan for their ancestors.

Importance of Pitra Paksha

Regarding Pitra Paksha, it is said in the scriptures, Shraddhibhi: Santushta: Pitar: Prenayanti N. That is, pleased with Shraddha and Tarpan, the ancestors do welfare of their descendants. It is believed that if there are frequent obstacles in a family, there is no success in work or there is a hindrance in child happiness, then pleasing the fathers, these problems are solved.

Measures to please fathers

Shraddha perform Shraddha and Pinddaan using Ganga water, sesame and Kush.

Tarpan, the ancestors are satisfied by offering black sesame and water.

Provide food to Brahmins, giving food and donation to the Brahmins and the needy in the ancestral side is very virtuous.

Donate grains and clothes, donate food, clothes and Dakshina for the peace of the soul of the ancestors.

The ancestors are pleased by the cow service and feeding the cow green fodder and bread to the cow.

The recitation of religious texts is auspicious to recite the Gita, Garuda Purana and Vishnu Sahasranama.

What not to do on the ancestral side

During this time, do not do auspicious tasks like weddings, home entry, shaving.

Avoid meat, alcohol and tamasic food.

Do not disrespect the ancestors, it is considered to be defective.
