Good news for electric vehicle (EV) owners in Mumbai and Maharashtra: the state government has announced toll exemption for electric vehicles at key toll plazas, including Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Samruddhi Mahamarg. This decision comes under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.

Details of the Toll Waiver
  • Effective from: August 21, 2025

  • Toll previously charged: Rs 250 for cars at Atal Setu (waived for EVs)

  • Applicability: Private and government electric cars and buses

  • Exclusions: Electric freight vehicles

Implementation and Policy Background

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed the exemption, while Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar stated that the necessary software for automatic toll waiver at Atal Setu has been prepared. This facility will start on the expressway and Samruddhi Mahamarg within the next two days.

The exemption is part of the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy announced in April 2025, aimed at promoting EV adoption and reducing dependence on conventional fuels. Other national and state highways may offer up to 50% discount for electric cars.

Growing EV Demand in Mumbai

According to official data, 22,400 EVs are registered in and around Mumbai, including:

  • 18,400 light four-wheelers

  • 2,500 small passenger vehicles

  • 1,200 heavy passenger buses

  • 300 medium passenger vehicles

On average, about 60,000 vehicles pass through Atal Setu daily, with a growing number of electric vehicles expected to benefit from this toll exemption.
