New Delhi: Arsenal produced a near-flawless display to hammer Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium to bag their second win in a row in the Premier League 2025-26 season on Saturday. After a scrappy 1-0 win against Manchester United in their season opener, Arsenal looked like a well-oiled machine as they cruised to a dominant victory against Leeds, treating their home crowd to a lop-sided goal fest.

Striker Viktor Gyokeres got off the mark with a brilliant solo goal for the Gunners, before completing a brace by converting a penalty in the injury time to complete his side’s 5-0 rout of Leeds. Timber scored twice from two strong headers on either side of the two halves, while Bukayo Saka also scored his first goal of the season for the Gunners, before limping off the field with a leg injury.

On a day that the club unveiled new signing Eberechi Eze before kick-off at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal produced an emphatic display at home in a double delight for their fans. Timber put the Gunners ahead in the 34th minute when he headed home from set piece. The defender then set up Saka in the 46th minute as the winger made it 2-0 for the hosts before the break.

With a 2-0 cushion, Arsenal started the second half in dominant fashion as Gyokeres scored his first Premier Legaue goal for the Gunners in the 48th minute. The striker got on the end of a ball from left-back Riccardo Calafiori and found himself in acres of space behind the Leeds backline as he unleashed a right-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 for Arsenal.

The game was done and dusted with little chances of a comeback for Leeds, however, the hosts were not done yet. Timber scored his second to extend Arsenal’s lead to 4-0 in the 56th minute with another sublime header from a corner.

Young Max Downman impresses on debut

15-year-old Max Downman impressed on his Premier League debut for Arsenal after coming on as a substitute for Noni Madueke in the second half. Downman, who is highly rated at the club, had caught the eyes of many with his impressive performances for the Gunners during their pre-season tour. Downman made an instant impact on his debut as he won a penalty after being brought down by Anton Stach in the box.

Thanks to Downman, Gyokeres completed a brace by converting the penalty from the spot, sealing Arsenal’s emphatic 5-0 victory against Leeds United. Downman became the second youngest player to play for Arsenal in the Premier League at the age of 15 years and 234 days, only behind his current teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who made his Arsenal debut at 15 years 181 days in 2022.

It remains to be seen if Downman will feature more regularly for Arsenal this season after the arrival of Eze from Palace. Though Arsenal have secured enough back-up to plot another title challenge, Saka’s injury adds to their woes as they already have Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard sidelines with injuries. Odegaard too walked off the pitch during the game against Leeds with a shoulder niggle.
