Daniil Medvedev's explosive meltdown at the US Open has drawn a variety of reactions from his fellow players. He was beaten by qualifier Benjamin Bonzi in the opening round on Monday, with the Frenchman winning a five-set marathon. Medvedev was unable to keep his cool as the match slipped away from him, with one incident sending him into a furious rage.
A photographer walked onto the court as Bonzi was preparing to serve on match point. Medvedev was left furious with the umpire's decision to award his opponent a new first serve because of a delay caused by 'outside interference'. He angrily confronted the umpire before shouting into a courtside microphone: "Guys, he wants to leave. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour."
The match was delayed for around seven minutes before Bonzi finally got to serve. When he did, he double-faulted and Medvedev claimed the next two sets to force a decider, but Bonzi battled back to win the match and progress to the second round.
Medvedev had another meltdown after the final point, returning to his chair and smashing his racket into pieces in front of a stunned crowd.
His erratic behaviour led to Boris Becker urging him to seek 'professional help', with Andrey Rublev also offering his fellow Russian some words of advice.
He said: "If he wants to change and needs help he has me, a lot of other friends and family that will help him, but it's his life and his decision what he needs to do. Only he knows what is happening."
Frances Tiafoe described Medvedev's furious reaction as a 'circus', adding: "That was something, for sure. But I mean, I get it. Look, I mean, it went overboard on a bunch of different sides, but I think it's just tough.
"People don't understand. You're travelling a lot. He holds himself to a super high standard. He's been struggling and he's struggling to face the music, right?
"He's struggling to face losing early and to guys he feels like he should be beating, and unprecedented matches, things not going your way. Another side comes out, and I hope to see him play to the level he's capable of playing.
"Obviously it's been a super tough stretch for him. To take the athlete out, to be a fan, I thought it was funny as hell. I'm not going to lie to you. I thought it was crazy, for sure."
Taylor Fritz took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer his take on the situation, explaining how the umpire's decision to hand Bonzi a new first serve ended up hurting the Frenchman.
Responding to a fan, Fritz said: "He should get a first but the call ends up backfiring and hurting him because of the pause, having to sit on a match point for 10 minutes and then the crowd getting super into it against you.
"Unless Bonzi hits a huge first serve and gets a free point off the pause, then the whole thing is actually really bad for him."
