Why was Ganesha applied elephant's head?

Lord Ganesha is considered 'first revered God', who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They are considered to be the most different among all the gods because of their particular form and qualities. Elephant-like head, long teeth and big ears with it. Due to these characteristics, Ganesha has a distinct identity. Most people know that Lord Shiva came in anger and cut Ganesha's head. But very few people know why the elephant's head was chosen instead of a human being for Bappa. Let us tell you the reason for this.

How did Ganesha get elephant's head?

In the scriptures and Puranas, Ganesha gets many stories behind the elephant's head. According to the Poornik Katha, once Mata Parvati had to go to bathe and no one was to guard out. Then Mata Parvati made a child with a boil on her body, put his life in it and named Ganesh. Then Mata Parvati asked to guard out of the child and ordered anyone not to go inside.

Why did Lord Shiva cut Ganesha's head?

Then Lord Shiva reached there and tried to go inside, but when Ganesh ji stopped God from going inside the gate while bathing, Shivji got angry. Bholenath got angry and cut the head of that child. After this incident, when Goddess came out of Parvati, she was very sad and started crying.

This is why elephant's head was applied to Ganesh ji

Mother Parvati told Lord Shiva that if she did not make this child alive, she will leave. Seeing Mother Parvati crying, Lord Shiva pledged to make Ganesha alive. Then Lord Shiva told his ganas to go in the north direction and bring the first head that appears. His ganas were seen by Indra's elephant Eravat and they took off his head. Then Lord Shiva connected the head of the Eravat elephant to the torso of Ganesha. Since then Ganesh ji is called Gajanan.
