SDM means Sub Divisional Magistrate. It is the largest administrative post at the tehsil level below the district level. After the training of an IAS officer, the first posting is mostly SDM. However, PCS rank officer with good merit (below 20) also gets posting in the post of SDM. This post is made for small towns or administrative responsibilities of Tehsil level. SDM is responsible for a revenue division or sub division, it is below the ADM and takes the action of the administration as per the order of the ADM. SDM is also deployed in many big cities, but he follows the orders of DM and ADM.

This is ADM's power

ADM is the post of an IAS officer who is also called Additional District Magistrate. However, the State Civil Service can also be posted as Senior Officer as ADM. SDM is deployed in cities where areas and population are high. Collector i.e. DM is not enough to handle such areas, so the government provides ADM as its assistant, which operates a district according to the order of the Collector. ADM is the second largest administrative officer after the District Magistrate in any district. In the absence of DM, he discharges all administrative responsibilities.

All the tehsildars in the sub -division of SDM, all work under SDM. The SDM is considered to be a link between Tehsildar and DM. SDM has many responsibilities such as revenue work, marriage registration, renewal of driving license, issuing certificates like Domicile etc. However, the SDM is not responsible for the entire district, while ADM is responsible for the entire district.
