When people think of famous markets in the UK, Borough Market, Bury Market and Leeds Kirkgate Market often spring to mind. However, many people are not aware of one particular market that is the longest in Europe.
Walthamstow Market, in the London Borough of Waltham, also comes second to Porta Portese in Rome as the biggest in Europe. It stretches for a mile along Walthamstow's High Street and dates all the way back to 1885. The market, which includes an expanse of over 500 stalls, is open five days a week.
TikTok account Google Earth Story posted a video on the market. It explains the range of items on sale at Walthamstow Market as well as some of its history.
The video said: "Most people don't realise this but the biggest outdoor market in the UK isn't in Leeds, Manchester or even central London. It stretches along a high street for nearly a mile yet you'll rarely see it in tourist guides.
"It has no roof, no glossy signs, no security gates, just endless rows of stalls selling absolutely everything. Fresh fish, fake designer bags, halal meat, phone chargers, flowers, fried chicken, tracksuits, vinyl records - all on the same street.
"It's bigger than Portobello Road, older than Camden Market and longer than most shopping malls. Yet most people outside the borough have never heard its name."
Many visitors to Walthamstow Market enjoy its traditional feel, with a vast array of goods on sale. It remains a central hub in the borough, located close to the main rail, tube and bus stations, as well as the post office and Central Library.
The video added: "While Borough Market serves up artisanal sourdough, this place sells samosas by the kilo. It first opened in 1885 and has barely paused since.
"It survived the Blitz, the recessions of the 1980s and even the rise of online shopping. Generations of traders still shout their prices every day, five days a week, rain or shine.
"Other markets chase style. This one just keeps moving. It's name - Walthamstow Market. It's the largest outdoor market in the United Kingdom."
