Chennai: The city of Chennai experienced severe disruption for the second consecutive night as intense rainfall, described by meteorologists as a cloudburst, lashed several parts of the city. Areas including Nungambakkam, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, and suburban regions like Avadi and Ambattur witnessed heavy downpours, leading to waterlogging and a significant drop in temperatures. The Regional Meteorological Department has now issued a forecast indicating that moderate rains are likely to persist across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today.

According to weather officials, a cloudburst occurred in parts of Chennai on Wednesday night, with Manali recording an unprecedented 27 cm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. Of this, a staggering 12 cm fell in just one hour – meeting the official criteria for a cloudburst, which is defined as rainfall exceeding 10 cm per hour. This extreme weather event has raised concerns about localized flooding and infrastructural strain, particularly in low-lying regions.

Moderate Rains and Gusty Winds Expected Across the State

The Meteorological Department has predicted that moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning are likely in Chennai and its suburbs throughout the day. While there will be periods of moderate sunshine, the overall weather is expected to remain wet. Additionally, ground winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour are anticipated during the spells of rain. A slight rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature is also forecast for certain parts of Tamil Nadu despite the ongoing rains.

Beyond Chennai, widespread rainfall is expected in several other districts. The western regions, particularly Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, have been alerted for heavy rainfall today. The general forecast for Tamil Nadu suggests a continuation of rainy conditions due to the prevailing weather system. Officials have advised residents to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and exercise caution while traveling.

In light of the continued rainfall and the previous night’s extreme weather event, authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions. People are advised to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas, steer clear of weakened structures, and stay indoors during intense thunderstorm activity.
