Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's Legacy

The very reason for observing Teacher's Day on the 5th September relates to the life and legacy of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose presidency was the first in the Indian scheme of things. Born on September 5, 1888, he was not only a statesman but a philosopher and educator of repute. He had his commitment towards education and the belief in the power of knowledge that actually earned him respect all over the globe.

When he became president in 1962, his pupils and admirers approached him for celebrating his birthday. He suggested in response that in place of celebrating his birthday, that day should be designated as Teacher's Day, meant to honor all teachers throughout the country. Hence, since that day, 5th September has been a marked day for thanksgiving towards the teaching community.
