Manchester United have refused to confirm whether Senne Lammens will be Ruben Amorim's starting goalkeeper ahead of his proposed move to Old Trafford. The Premier League side have struck a £18.2million agreement to sign the Belgian shot-stopper from Royal Antwerp.
The 23-year-old has penned a five-year deal and is making his way to Manchester to finalise the transfer ahead of tonight's 7pm deadline. Old Trafford insiders view Lammens as a promising young keeper with tremendous potential ahead of him. say the Manchester Evening News, but refused to say whether or not he will be the first choice. The Red Devils had explored a potential swoop for Emiliano Martinez but remain confident that Lammens represents the perfect acquisition.
Whether Lammens will immediately step into United's No. 1 jersey remains uncertain after Ruben Amorim confessed on Saturday it is "hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment".
"Guys, they are humans," the 40-year-old said. "Manchester United, everything is huge. Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. And you can see, I can change the goalkeeper in the situations that happen. We are in that moment.
"I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment. But if you look at the first goal, we can defend it better. We suffered a quite similar goal against Fulham, because we don't do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side.
"All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper. So, the players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. So it's not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve."
United have shipped six goals this campaign with four stemming from goalkeeping blunders - two from Altay Bayindir and another pair courtesy of Andre Onana. Despite his determination to remain at Manchester United, Onana's future hangs in the balance following the closure of the transfer window.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper was confident of his position at the club after a failed loan enquiry for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez and reassurances from United that a new keeper was not a priority. However, on deadline day, United considered signing the Argentine before finalising a deal with Antwerp for Lammens.
Onana was benched during United's 3-2 Premier League victory over Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, following his blunders in the shocking defeat to Grimsby Town in the League Cup second round. Throughout the year, United have been on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, and Amorim's view of Onana has changed over this period.
