The digital payment system is now easy and accessible to all, as UPI has become possible without internet. Keeping in mind the rural areas and feature phone users, the National Payment Corporation (NPCI) has introduced two major solutions: *USSD service (99#) and UPI 123pay.

*First method: 99# (USSD based UPI)

The simplest way is: Dial *99# from mobile phone. This service works without the need for an internet or smartphone. Options like “Send Money”, “Check Balance” are seen in the menu. The user has to enter the recipient’s number or UPI ID, then complete the transaction by entering the amount and your UPI PIN. This service is supported by almost all large banks and telecom providers, and is available in 13 languages. However, the limit per transaction is ₹ 5,000 and also adds a minor fee (about ₹ 0.50).

Second method: UPI 123pay

In March 2022, RBI and NPCI launched UPI 123Pay, especially made for feature phones users. There are four major methods under this:

IVR (Interactive Voice Response): Call a predetermined number, follow the voice menu, enter the amount and UPI PIN and the transaction will be done.

Missed Call based: Payer has to make a missed call; Then he gets a callback, in which the amount and the PIN are paid.

Feature phone app functionality: Some feature phones include the Native UPI app (eg Jio or Airtel Pay App) that work without internet.

Proximity Sound‑ Acid Payments: Payment from additional authentication (PIN) by tapping near a sound box.
