Stardew Valley developer ConcernedApe has treated fans to a surprise announcement, and it's great news.

In a social media post, the Stardew Valley creator confirmed that the game will be getting a big new content update at some point in the future.

While there's no official release date, Stardew Valley update 1.7 is in development for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

"Okay, I revealed this at the concert last night and now the cat's out of the bag, so I will confirm for everyone: There will be a Stardew Valley 1.7 update," reads a ConcernedApe post.

"No release date, no estimate. But it's happening."

In a follow up tweet to a fan, ConcernedApe said that the development of the update shouldn't interfere with upcoming release Haunted Chocolatier.

If the previous content update is anything to go by, the new download could add a new farm, festival and more.

Update 1.6, for example, added Meadowlands Farm, which contains "chewy blue grass that animals love". The farm contains a coop and two chickens.

That's on top of a three-day Desert Festival in spring, as well as two mini fishing festivals and new lines of dialogue.

The news comes as Stardew Valley prepares to join the PlayStation Plus Essentials line-up for September.

Available from September 2, the PS Plus Essentials also include the superb Psychonauts 2, as well as first-person puzzle game Viewfinder.

While Stardew Valley is the pick of the bunch, Psychonauts 2 is a highly-rated game, earning Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam. Fans love the creative level design, the colourful visuals and the game's unique sense of character.

Viewfinder, meanwhile, tasks players with using a special camera to reshape reality and overcome obstacles.
