BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent was left taken aback after her co-star Jon Kay made a surprising admission about the BBC morning show.

The duo returned to TV screens on Tuesday (2 September) with a new instalment of BBC Breakfast as they brought TV viewers all of the latest news and updates.

During one segment, Jon and Sally shared all of the day's headlines, with Jon unveiling the findings of a study that examined how long people spend on their sofas throughout their lives.

"If you're watching us sitting on your sofa having a cup of tea this morning, think about how long you will be spending on the sofa today," he said. "There's a study in the Mail which says that the average adult spends more than four years of their life sitting down on the couch. "

Sally exclaimed: "Only four years?! I would have said it was quite a lot more than that."

"It is for us!" Jon joked, before adding, "97.5 minutes on the couch every day, most adults spend."

Sally said she didn't think the findings were "that bad", prompting Jon to reveal he'd calculated how long he and Sally spend on the sofa due to their presenting roles on BBC Breakfast.

"Do you want to know what is bad? I was just doing some calculations...," Jon teased, leading Sally to insist: "No, oh no. Don't tell me!"

Jon went on to explain exactly how many minutes he and his co-host spend on the BBC Breakfast sofa per day and how that adds up each week.

He told Sally, "So, we do 210 minutes per day here, which accounts to 630 minutes a week. That's just here, on top of at home. Which means we do 32,760 minutes on the sofa, just doing Breakfast, or 546 hours."

Sally was stunned by the findings and gasped, "No! That's bad!" before asking Jon, "But do you actually sit on the sofa at home? I bet you don't sit still."

Jon revealed his time sitting on the sofa probably adds up to "more than four years", leaving Sally to suggest that the duo invest in "standing desks" to ensure they stand up while hosting BBC Breakfast.

Concluding the segment, Jon joked, "Shall we stand up? You're alright, you did the news over there!"

BBC Breakfast airs everyday at 6am on BBC One.
