Rajeev Shukla, current BCCI vice-president, is reportedly poised to assume the position of BCCI president following Roger Binny’s exit. The development arises after the role remained unoccupied for nearly two months. Binny stepped down upon reaching the age cap of 70, stipulated for office bearers of the BCCI and state units.

For now, Shukla has been discharging the duties linked to the top post. Sources cited by The Times of India claim that his administrative pedigree places him at the forefront. The source said,

“Rajeev Shukla stands a very good chance to be elected as the BCCI president in the election due to happen later this month."

On August 27, Shukla presided over the BCCI apex council meeting, a responsibility earlier handled by Binny. The former, a seasoned cricket administrator, previously served as the IPL chairman in 2015. His current role as vice-president dates back to December 2020 when he was elected unopposed.

Leadership Transition and Possible Contenders

While Shukla’s elevation appears probable, discussions continue over other key positions. According to the report, Arun Dhumal, currently IPL chairman, and Anirudh Chaudhary, former BCCI treasurer, are potential names for the BCCI secretary’s role. The current secretary, Devajit Saikia, is also under consideration for continuity.

Chaubdhary’s candidacy is also being linked to the IPL chairmanship, creating multiple possibilities. One insider remarked,

“Apparently, there is some confusion around whether Dhumal is supposed to serve a cooling period. Things will become clearer in the next few days.”

The same source acknowledged Saikia’s performance, stating,

“Saikia has done a good job so far in the almost nine months that he has been in charge, driving BCCI efficiently through a period where a lot has happened, both on and off the field in Indian cricket.”
