Total Lunar Eclipse 2025: A total lunar eclipse is scheduled to take place on the night of September 7-8, 2025, and will be observable from various locations across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a statement regarding this astronomical phenomenon. This event promises to be a delight for astronomy enthusiasts, as it will be visible over a vast area, including parts of Antarctica, the western Pacific Ocean, Australasia, Asia, the Indian Ocean, Europe, and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
In India, all stages of the eclipse, including totality, will be visible nationwide.
The umbral phase will commence at 9:57 PM IST on September 7 and conclude at 1:27 AM IST on September 8.
Interestingly, the last lunar eclipse visible from India occurred on October 28, 2023, and was a partial eclipse. A lunar eclipse takes place during a full moon when the Earth aligns between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire Moon enters the Earth's shadow, while a partial lunar eclipse only involves a portion of the Moon being obscured.
The IMD has also noted that the next total lunar eclipse will happen on March 3, 2026, making this upcoming event particularly special.
“On the tranquil night of Bhadra 16-17, as Sunday transitions into Monday, the skies over India will present a stunning spectacle—a total lunar eclipse, fully visible across the country. From 9:57 PM to 1:27 AM IST, the Moon will traverse through the Earth's shadow, with the peak of the eclipse occurring at 11:42 PM,” the IMD shared in a post on X.
“This celestial event connects continents—from Antarctica to Asia, Europe to the Pacific—reminding us that under the same moon, we are united as one world. Let us take a moment to gaze upwards and appreciate the serene beauty of the universe. The next such event will return on March 3, 2026, but this night is ours to treasure,” the IMD added.
