Teacher's Day 2025: Who was the child who made death deity Yamraj and the secret of the immortal soul?

Who was that child? Who made death deity Yamraj and the secret of immortal soul

Teachers Day 2025: There are many episodes in the Guru-Shishya tradition of Hinduism, but there is a story that contains both mystery and knowledge. Nachiketa, a 10 -year -old boy, who himself made Yamraj, the deity of death himself and knew the secret of the immortality of the soul which is still recorded in the Kathopanishad. Yamraj also kept avoiding the answer, but Nachiketa knew what happens after death. This story is not just a disciple and a guru, but the discovery of the truth hidden beyond life and death.

Nachiketa's Yamlok Gaman

Nachiketa was the son of sage Vajshravas. According to the legend, Maharishi Vajashrava performed a yajna in which he was donating his property, but the cows to be donated were old and weak. Seeing this, Nachiketa asked his father to whom would he donate me? The angry father said in a rage, I donate you to Yamraj. This word became destiny and Nachiketa reached Yamlok.

Child waiting in Yamlok

Nachiketa reached Yamlok, considering his father's voice as true. Yamraj was not present there at that time. Nachiketa, three days and three nights, waited for Yamraj patiently without food and water. When Yamraj returned, he promised to give three boons, impressed by Nachiketa's penance and patience.

Three boon and secret of third

Nachiketa asked for the first two boon. Father's anger should be calm. Get knowledge of fire learning. But in the third boon, he asked- what happens to the soul after death? Yamraj wanted to avoid first. He said, this mystery is difficult for the gods too, ask for something else but Nachiketa remains adamant. Then Yamraj told him the esoteric secret of soul and salvation.

Spiritual truth of soul

Yamraj said, the soul neither takes birth nor dies. No weapon can cut it, no one can burn fire, no one can soak water. The soul is eternal and indestructible. Not only this, Yamraj also explained the path of yoga, enlightenment and salvation to Nachiketa.

Why is this story unique?

In this context, Nachiketa becomes not only a child, but the investigative seeker of truth. At the same time, Yamraj is not only the god of death, but becomes a guru who opens the secret of the eternality of the soul beyond life and death. This is the reason that this saga of Nachiketayaraj is still considered the highest example of knowledge and curiosity in Indian philosophy.

Nachiketa's immortal saga

This episode gave birth to the Kathopanishad, which is the foundation stone of Vedanta philosophy. Nachiketa became a symbol of the discovery of truth, not just a child. His name is still taken when the secret of soul, death and salvation is discussed.
