According to Hindu belief, Jitiya Vrat started at the beginning of Kali Yuga. It is believed that once a king named Jimutavahana was going somewhere, when he heard the cry of a woman. On going to him, he came to know that today Lord Vishnu's vehicle Garur will take the son of the woman who will make his food. The king then assured the woman that he would have prepared Garuda's food instead of her son. When he appeared at the place of the son of the woman, Garuda was pleased with the king's charity and blessed him to go to Vaikunth and revive the rest of the children as well. It is believed that since then women started fasting and worshiping the Jemutavahana deity on this day for the safety and good fortune of their children.
