Mumbai: Saturday holds deep spiritual significance in Hinduism as it is dedicated to Lord Shani (Saturn). Devotees believe that worshipping Shani Dev on this day helps reduce suffering and brings divine blessings. Rituals often include offering mustard oil and lighting an oil lamp as a mark of respect.

However, traditions also caution against buying mustard oil on Saturdays. Instead, people are encouraged to donate or offer it at temples. This practice is rooted in centuries-old beliefs linking mustard oil to Shani Dev’s grace and protection from misfortune.

Buying Mustard Oil on Saturday: A Religious Taboo

Hindu scriptures suggest that purchasing mustard oil on Saturdays is inauspicious. While devotees are encouraged to donate or offer the oil to Shani Dev, bringing it home through purchase is discouraged. It is believed that such an act may invite Shani’s negative influence.

Benefits of Donating Oil

Donating mustard oil on a Saturday is considered highly auspicious. According to belief, it reduces health problems, drives away negative energy from the household, and ensures continued blessings of Shani Dev.

Relief from Shani Dosha

Astrological conditions such as Shani Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya, or Shani Dosh are said to ease when mustard oil is offered at the feet of Lord Shani on Saturdays. Devotees believe this ritual helps calm Saturn’s malefic effects and brings peace.

Avoiding Negative Impact

It is widely believed that buying oil on Saturdays may bring Shani’s unfavourable influence into one’s life. Hence, priests advise devotees to refrain from buying it, and instead focus on donations or temple offerings.

The Hanuman Connection

A popular legend links this tradition to Hanuman’s visit to Lanka. When his tail was set ablaze, Shani Dev was also present. Struck by Hanuman’s strength, Shani challenged him but was defeated and injured. Seeking forgiveness, Shani was given mustard oil by Hanuman to soothe his wounds. Grateful, Shani promised that those who offer him oil would be freed from suffering and blessed with his protection.
