Astrological conditions such as Shani Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya, or Shani Dosh are said to ease when mustard oil is offered at the feet of Lord Shani on Saturdays. Devotees believe this ritual helps calm Saturn’s malefic effects and brings peace.

It is widely believed that buying oil on Saturdays may bring Shani’s unfavourable influence into one’s life. Hence, priests advise devotees to refrain from buying it, and instead focus on donations or temple offerings.

The Hanuman Connection

A popular legend links this tradition to Hanuman’s visit to Lanka. When his tail was set ablaze, Shani Dev was also present. Struck by Hanuman’s strength, Shani challenged him but was defeated and injured. Seeking forgiveness, Shani was given mustard oil by Hanuman to soothe his wounds. Grateful, Shani promised that those who offer him oil would be freed from suffering and blessed with his protection.
