Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a real-time payment system. With its help, you can send money to anyone directly from your bank account or ask for money from them, that too 24×7 and immediately. Earlier, to use UPI, a UPI ID, QR code, or mobile number linked to the bank account was required. Later, to make the facility easier, the concept of the UPI number emerged.

UPI number can be an 8-9 digit number or your 10 digit mobile number, which you can link to your UPI ID. Using a UPI number, you can send or receive money through any UPI app. In simple language, you can use your UPI Number in place of your UPI ID. Just like money is sent by entering the UPI ID (abc@bank) now, similarly, you can send and receive money by entering the UPI Number.

How to create a UPI Number?

First of all, the user has to create their UPI ID. After that, they can also generate a UPI number if they want.

Open your UPI app (like PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, BHIM, etc.).

Go to profile or settings and choose the option to create a UPI number.

Here you can choose your favorite 8–9 digit number (if available).

After confirmation, this number will be linked to your bank account and UPI ID.

How to delete a UPI number?

Go to the UPI app and click on Manage UPI Number.

Select the number you want to delete.

Click on Delete/Deactivate.

Your UPI number will be disabled immediately, and no one will be able to use it.
