Three members of a family and their pet dog died after the compressor of an air conditioner exploded in their building in Haryana's Faridabad on Monday. The son in the family saved his life by jumping out of the window of the building. He is currently in a critical condition.
Why Do ACs Blast?
1. Faulty Wiring or Short Circuit:
Old or damaged wiring is one of the biggest reasons for AC blasts. If the wiring in the indoor or outdoor unit is worn out, it can cause a short circuit. Always get the wiring checked at regular intervals.
2. Low-Quality Extension Boards: Using a poor-quality extension board to run an AC is extremely dangerous. Overloading can easily lead to a short circuit, which may cause fire.
3. Lack of Regular Servicing: Without proper servicing, dust and dirt accumulate inside the AC. This makes the motor and electrical parts overheat, increasing the risk of blast.
4. Overheated Compressor: If the compressor works under heavy load or develops a fault, it can overheat and trigger a blast.
5. Cheap or Fake Spare Parts: Installing poor-quality spare parts during repairs may save money but increases the risk of electrical failure and blast.
Warning Signals Before AC Blast
1. Strange Noises: If your AC suddenly starts making unusual sounds like vibrations, rumbling, or rattling, it could be a sign of an internal fault. Do not ignore it.
2. Burning Smell: A smell of burning wires or plastic while the AC is running is a serious warning. Switch off the AC immediately, unplug it, and call a qualified mechanic.
3. Overheating: If the indoor unit heats up excessively after running for some time, it may indicate that the compressor is under heavy load. This can be dangerous if left unchecked.
4. Smoke from AC: Smoke coming out of an AC should never be ignored. Turn it off right away and get it inspected by a professional technician.
5. Frequent On-Off Cycling: If the AC keeps switching on and off repeatedly, it points to a problem in the electrical circuit. Get it checked!
6. Sparking Near the Plug: If you notice sparks near the AC plug or socket, immediately cut off the main power supply by switching off the MCB.
How to Prevent AC Blasts?
1. Get Regular Servicing: Service your AC at least twice a season-before summer begins and once during the season. This helps remove dust from both indoor and outdoor units and ensures wiring is in good condition.
2. Use High-Quality Electrical Products: Always use branded, high-quality wires, plugs, and extension boards to power the AC. Avoid using cheap products that may not handle the load.
3. Don't Keep AC Running All Night Without a Break: Use the timer mode available in ACs during night. This feature automatically switches off the AC after a set interval, reducing the chances of overheating, short circuits, and fire hazards— while also saving electricity.
4. Install a Stabilizer: If your area faces frequent voltage fluctuations, a stabilizer is essential. It protects the AC from sudden power surges, especially during peak summer electricity demand.
