IAS officer without upsc: Indian Administrative Service i.e. IAS is considered one of the most prestigious government jobs in the country. This is the reason why every year millions of youth dream of becoming IAS. Most people think that the only way to become IAS is UPSC Civil Services Examination. But is it really necessary to pass UPSC to become an IAS? The answer is not.

Is it possible to become IAS without UPSC?

The quality of our democratic system is that the administration is not only dependent on the examination. UPSC is the main route, but apart from this there are some options through which qualified and experienced people can handle important responsibility like IAS. The government believes that some people make special contribution in their field, whether it is state services, science or technical institutes, or sectors related to policy making. If such people become IAS, the administrative structure gets strengthened.

How can IAS become without passing UPSC?

Promotion from State Service (PCS)

This is the most common method. The PCS officers selected through the State Public Service Commission (State PSC) may be promoted in IAS after showing hard work and better performance for a few years. PCS officers often work as Tehsildar, Deputy District Magistrate or District Level Officer. Promotion is usually promoted after 15-20 years of service and better performance. For this, approval of the Central Government, State Government and UPSC is necessary.

Lateral entry

Its aim is that not only career bureaucrats, but experts from private sectors, education and technical institutions also contribute to policy making. Under this, eligible candidates are appointed to directors, joint secretary or above posts. These appointments are made on a contracual basis and IAS level responsibilities are given.

IAS is also appointed in special circumstances

In some rare cases, the government involves those who have made extraordinary contribution in their territory. For example, Defense Service Officer, Scientist or Technical Expert. This appointment depends on the special recommendation and discretion of the government. Although UPSC exam is the most common and reliable way to become IAS, but this is not the only way. There is also a chance to become IAS through arrangements like state service promotion, lateral entry and appointment in special circumstances. That is, if you have experience, skills and expenses, then you can play an important role in administrative service even without passing UPSC.
