You have often seen the bride and groom wearing a heavy flower necklace in weddings, but have you ever seen someone wearing a garland of ‘grass’? Maybe not! But this unique and interesting tradition is an important part of Nepal’s weddings. In Napali weddings, the bridegroom and bride wear flowers as well as a special type of grass garland, which is called ‘Dubo Ko Mala’. It may seem simple to see, but its importance in Nepali culture and tradition is very deep. What is this ‘Dubo’ grass? ‘Dubo’ is actually Cynodon Dactylon, which is commonly used in worship in India. This is the same grass that is also offered to Lord Ganesha. This grass is considered very sacred and auspicious in Nepal. Why is the garland of grass worn? Many deep spiritual and cultural meanings are hidden behind this tradition: the blessings of never witnessing: The biggest feature of the coach grass is that it never dries or dies. If it is uprooted and even a little moisture is found, then it becomes green again. Similarly, the bride and groom are blessed by wearing a garland that their love and relationship should always be green like this grass, never wither away and blossom again after every difficulty. Symbol of Amrita and Longevity: Due to its never-ending nature, Dube grass is considered a symbol of immortality and longevity. This garland is a symbol of the wishes of the future couple’s long, healthy and a happy life. Empowerment and auspiciousness: Dube grass is considered very sacred in Hindu customs. It is believed that it removes negative energy and brings positivity. Nothing can be auspicious for the beginning of a sacred bond like marriage. The message of the hine roots: The roots of the grass are very deep and firmly spread in the ground. This garland gives a message to the bride and groom to make the roots of their relationship so deep and strong that no difficulty can shake it. So next time you see a Nepali wedding picture and find the bride and groom wearing grass garlands in it, it will not be surprised. It is not just a garland, but a sacred bond of love, faith, immortality and many wishes.
