Meeting Highlights

Diphu, Sept 10: Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday to discuss developmental issues in the district.

During their discussion, Ronghang emphasized that villages within the KAAC have been unable to receive direct funding from the Finance Commission for rural development due to constitutional limitations.

He expressed concerns that this funding gap has hindered progress in vital sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which are essential for the local community's welfare.

Additionally, the memorandum addressed the implementation of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution. Ronghang highlighted that for over 55 years, residents of the hill districts have faced instability and unrest, with many agreements failing to provide lasting solutions for autonomy. He pointed out that the provisions under the Sixth Schedule have not adequately met the needs and rights of indigenous communities, leaving numerous issues unresolved. He urged for a tripartite dialogue involving a KAAC-led delegation, Assam government representatives, and the Union Government to formulate a fair and lasting solution for the region's autonomy.

Ronghang was joined by Amarsing Tisso, a Member of Parliament; Darsing Ronghang, MLA from Howraghat; and several KAAC Executive Members, including Surjya Rongphar, Lunsing Teron, and Elwin Teron.

The memorandum concluded with a hopeful message, reflecting the collective optimism of the hill district residents for proactive measures from the Union Government.
