Air travel between India and Nepal is now getting back on track. After a brief suspension caused by the recent developments in Nepal, both Air India and IndiGo have announced the resumption of their scheduled Kathmandu flights starting September 11, 2025.

The announcement comes after the Authorities reopened Tribhuvan International Airport after shutting it down over severe security concerns linked to large-scale Gen Z protests in Nepal’s capital.

Why Flights Were Suspended

Airlines temporarily suspended all flights to Kathmandu earlier this week after unrest and operational disruptions in Nepal. The decision was made out of caution, with airlines prioritising passenger safety as the situation on the ground unfolded.

Air India’s Special Flights

To assist stranded passengers, Air India stepped in with relief flights operating on September 10 and 11 between Delhi and Kathmandu. The airline confirmed that its regular scheduled services will also resume from September 11.

IndiGo’s Four Daily Flights

IndiGo, India’s largest carrier, also announced that it will restart its Kathmandu operations on September 11 with four daily scheduled flights.

In addition to this, the airline will also operate two special relief flights (subject to regulatory approvals) on the same day, offered at reduced fares to make it easier for stranded travellers to return home.

What This Means for Travellers

For thousands of passengers stuck on either side of the border, this is good news. The return of scheduled flights brings stability after several days of uncertainty.

Both Air India and IndiGo have encouraged passengers to check their flight status before going to the airport, as schedules could still change based on clearances.

Final Thoughts

In practical terms, the restart brings back one of the busiest short-haul international routes in the region. For travellers, this means fewer delays, more options, and a smoother journey to reunite with loved ones or continue their travels.
