According to a SCREEN report, the lawyer explained that Portugal offers tax-free inheritance of properties, which might be the reason why Sunjay wanted foreign citizenship for all three of his kids, including Samaira, Kiaan, and Priya Kapur's daughter, Safira (19). The lawyer can be quoted by SCREEN as saying:
"Certainly, he was toying with the idea of Portuguese citizenship for his two children for the reason that properties overseas would be exempted from inheritance tax, and all 3 of his kids, one from Mrs Priya Kapur and two from Karisma Kapoor, all three of them would be saved from inheritance tax because Portugal doesn't have an inheritance tax regime."
 

 
Why did Karisma Kapoor's lawyer claim that Sunjay's will's contents were 'suspicious'?
Sunjay's will excluded the mention of Samaira and Kiaan, which means they were denied any inheritance rights. However, before his untimely death, the businessmen's proposal of Portuguese citizenship for them was deemed 'suspicious' by Karisma's lawyers. According to him, Sunjay's desire for his kids to have a hassle-free inheritance with a foreign citizenship in May 2025, while already making a will without their names on it two months prior, was contradictory. The lawyer's exact words were:
"So, if in May 2025, you are trying to create citizenship for your children to avoid inheritance tax of overseas property, it is a little surprising that you had already executed a will in March 2025, in which all the overseas properties are devolved to Mrs. Priya Sachdeva and none to the children, so that's a suspicious circumstance."
 

 
Did Karisma Kapoor accept Sunjay Kapur's Portuguese citizenship offer?
According to her lawyer's statement, Karisma rejected her ex-husband's proposal to take up the citizenship of Portugal. The reason for this was that she had to relinquish her Indian citizenship, which she did not want to. Even though her chat screenshots presented in court show that she had a discussion about the same with Sunjay, she later made up her mind not to change her and her kids' citizenship. "He was trying to get a Portuguese citizenship certainly for his children, and possibly for Karisma Kapoor. She was told that she will have to give up Indian citizenship if she took up Portuguese citizenship and she refused."
