A baggage handler has shared his top tips for ensuring that your suitcase arrives at its destination without damage. On the question-and-answer platform Quora, Former Ground Operations Specialist K Handunnetti explained that airline staff don't lose luggage on purpose.

Baggage is usually lost because of errors or short connection times. However, certain suitcases are more likely to be thrown around than others. The former airport worker explained that to avoid losing luggage, travellers should never check in bags that have "weak handles".

To reduce damage, "don't check in heavy bags, stick to the 23kg recommendation," and most importantly, select the right type of suitcase.

He said: "When you shop for a bag, select a brand that is commonly used by airline crew. This is my personal favourite tip. My aviation friends and I use only one brand, and we have never had any damage."

Some of the most popular luggage brands used by cabin crew include Globe-Trotter, Travelpro, GATE8 or Antler.

"And unless it is unavoidable, do not check in off shape/ size/ design items (baby strollers get left behind more than any other item!)"

Other tips include travelling direct, "point to point", as most luggage is lost during connecting flights. However, if passengers have a connecting flight, they should "have ample time between connections". And of course, always "travel light to reduce damage," he added.

Another baggage handler named Adam also shared his top tips on Reddit. He recommended always using a suitcase with wheels. This is because "if your bag has at least two high-quality wheels, then it allows us to roll them down the hold quickly, making it more painless for us".

"Otherwise, we have to throw the bags in order to keep to the scheduled times."
