Maltesers have finally put an end to the ongoing argument about the proper way to eat the beloved chocolate treat. In a recent survey it was revealed that over half of Maltesersfans prefer to suck the treat without chewing, whilst a quarter carefully nibble away at the chocolate coating before devouring the centre, and another quarter bite the sweet in half and then eat each half individually.

However, the brand's scientists have called out these techniques and revealed that the chocolate has been engineered to be eaten in particular manner to enhance its taste and deliver a complete multi-sensory experience.

According to Megan Rushman, the brand’s associate product development scientist, the malted interior serves a clever purpose.

Not only does it add that signature satisfying crunch, but it also helps break down the chocolate, preventing the sticky, hard-to-clean feeling you sometimes get on the roof of your mouth from solid chocolate.

Therefore, to get the maximum flavour, Megan recommends popping the whole Malteser into your mouth before crunching down.

This, she says, ensures the chocolate covers the largest surface area of your palate, creating a multi-sensory experience by stimulating both your taste receptors and your sense of hearing with that unmistakable crunch.

The revelation comes as Maltesers launches its new white chocolate version. “It's the unique texture and balance between the chocolate and the malt centre that makes the sweet treat so iconic and loved by so many," she added.

A survey of 2,000 Maltesers enthusiasts found that those who defy the 'official' advice by sucking on the ball do so because they enjoy how the malt dissolves in their mouth. Another 23 per cent savour it this way to extend the experience.

Those who prefer to nibble said they favour their method because it gives them two bursts of flavour, while 24 per cent simply want to take their time with the treat. On average, respondents believe 22 seconds is the perfect time to relish the taste.

While 53 per cent insist room temperature is best, 31 per cent prefer them chilled straight from the fridge.

Fans also declared that the ideal time of day to eat Maltesers is between 7pm and 9pm – ideally while watching telly (57 per cent) or as an after-dinner treat (20 per cent).

Also weighing in on the debate was Kate Lawler and Boj, as they shared their thoughts on the best way to eat Maltesers through playful debate content. Kate said: "As a nation we love a food debate, and it's no different in my house.

"Boj is adamant that you nibble the outside, while I love to pop one in and give it a crunch.

"Science might agree with me but to be honest whether you nibble, melt, or pop them in one, figuring it out is all part of the fun."
