The Himachal Pradesh Government has introduced the Chief Minister’s Tourism Startup Scheme, aimed at fostering sustainable tourism and generating self-employment opportunities by enhancing homestay facilities throughout the state.

As part of this initiative, financial support and interest subsidies will be provided for establishing new tourism ventures and improving existing homestay accommodations. This program is specifically designed for genuine Himachali residents, emphasizing the government's commitment to empowering local communities and promoting grassroots entrepreneurship.

A spokesperson from the government announced that the scheme offers an interest subsidy of up to 3% for urban areas, 4% for rural regions, and 5% for tribal areas.

This subsidy will be applicable for a maximum duration of three years on loans up to Rs 2 crore. The initiative aims to formalize the expanding homestay sector, improve quality standards, and provide budget-friendly options for tourists, including backpackers, students, and solo travelers.

“Homestays not only provide affordable lodging but also allow visitors to immerse themselves in Himachal’s rich traditions, cuisine, and lifestyle,” the spokesperson remarked.

These accommodations have become a vital link between travelers and local communities, enabling tourists to explore remote areas while offering locals a sustainable income source.

By providing guests with a closer look at village life and cultural heritage, homestays promote decentralized tourism, ensuring that benefits extend beyond popular destinations like Shimla and Manali.

The government views this initiative as a means to achieve balanced regional growth. Aligned with Himachal’s environmental objectives, the scheme encourages private entrepreneurs to invest in eco-friendly tourism infrastructure while safeguarding the state’s delicate ecology.

“Himachal has long drawn tourists with its pristine environment, rivers, forests, spiritual sites, and picturesque valleys. This scheme underscores our dedication to developing a sustainable tourism model that bolsters the economy without compromising environmental integrity,” the spokesperson added.

According to the Himachal Economic Survey 2024–25, the tourism and hospitality sector accounts for 7.78% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), underscoring its significance in economic growth.
