With the summer sun lasting through September, grab the chance for one last holiday to this beautiful small village by the sea. The perfect 'staycation' could be just around the corner, with this Cornish fishing village named one of the most beautiful in the UK. Found in the Roseland peninsula is St Mawes, a dream destination for day trips or weekend travellers. Offering clear-watered coves, a historic castle, and colourful streets, the hidden gem makes a dazzling sight.

Rightmove states that The Times recently awarded the village "the most beautiful place to visit" in England. House prices in the village average a shocking £2.2 million. Arguably, the rich royal history of its 16th-century castle, known for reflecting Tudor Henry VIII's reign, has been the foundation for the wealth of quality hotels and sublime walks; it's easy to understand the allure of this fishing village.

The infamous castle is of a round structure with a cloverleaf plan and boasts a four-storey tower. Made to guard the Fal estuary, visitors can now look out across neighbouring towns on clear days. Receiving exceptional reviews on TripAdvisor, one comment wrote: "[The] small round castle is situated on a headland above the village of St Mawes with unrestricted views of the Fal estuary to Falmouth itself".

The continued, saying: "The castle is essentially one big gun emplacement with cannon on the foreshore in front of the castle and on the battlements," adding that, within the castle, information can be found, offering "a really good picture of what life was like" in the Tudor period.

There is also the option of exploring Europe's final fishery, which harvests oysters by only using sailing vessels. A six-mile hike stretches from the castle, passing by several parts of the village, and can even end with a ferry to provide a sea perspective. With year-round services between the village and Falmouth, the summer season brings a small service to Place on the Percuil River's southern bank. River boats can also be found to head upstream to the National Trust's Trelissick estate, says Visit Cornwall. St Mawes has now become a hub for sailing; it's a local tradition.

King Charles and consort Camilla have also been spotted on the ferry sailing between St Mawes and Falmouth, across Cornwall's Roseland Peninsula. In the image, the then-prince is seen to be holding up an umbrella against a shower of water, laughing with his wife as they attempt to avoid the sea spray.

Camilla also launched a boat in her name, which confirmed the couple's love for the village.
