
Senior and popular leader of Punjab politics, Harmel Singh Tohra, has passed away. He breathed his last at Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Sunday evening (21 September). 77 -year -old Tohra was ill for a long time. The news of his death has immersed the entire Punjab into mourning. The funeral will be performed on 23 September (Tuesday) at 11 am in his native village Tohra.
Harmel Singh Tohra, the veteran leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the son -in -law of Jathedar Late Gurcharan Singh Tohra. His family has been active in Punjab's Sikh politics for a long time.
The political journey of Harmail Singh Tohra started from village to village. They always stood up for people's problems and rights. In 1997, he became a cabinet minister in the Shiromani Akali Dal government and was also elected MLA from Sanour.
In the factional era of factionalism within the Akali Dal, he resigned as a minister and joined the Tohra faction. In 2016, he contested from the Aam Aadmi Party and later returned to the Akali Dal. However, after the partition of the party, he continued with the rebel faction.
His simplicity, spontaneous nature and public service to Harmel Singh Tohra gave a special identity among the public. While being a cabinet minister, he gave priority to the development of Punjab and was active to solve the problems of the people.
His death is being described as a big loss for Punjab politics. Various political parties and social organizations expressed condolences to his family. Leaders say that the lack of reconciliation will always be felt.
