Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-talked-about film Homebound has become India’s official entry to the Oscars, but its selection has stirred controversy across social media. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, the film explores a deeply rooted social issue, earning acclaim at several international film festivals. Now, ahead of its theatrical release in India, questions are being raised over whether Homebound meets the Academy’s eligibility requirements.

According to Oscar rules, a film must be released between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025, and must have at least a seven-day continuous theatrical run. Responding to the criticism, Film Federation of India (FFI) chairman Firdausul Hasan clarified that Homebound fully complies with the guidelines. “The film will be released in theaters before September 30, and the producers have already submitted an undertaking that it will run for a full week,” he explained, adding that only after confirming these requirements was the film included in the list for jury consideration.

Producer Karan Johar expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “We are delighted that Homebound has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Neeraj Ghaywan’s hard work will surely touch millions of hearts across the globe.” Director Neeraj Ghaywan echoed the sentiment, calling it an honor to represent India on the world stage. “This film is rooted in the love for our soil and people, and it fills me with pride to take our stories to the world,” he said.
